TV #1 - Karan Johar's What The Love!

Oh boy oh boy oh boy.... Our first show is the most trash show we've probably seen on Netflix in a while. It's called What the Love! with Karan Johar but it should be called WTF, Karan Johar. For a man that's created such staples in Indian cinema rom-com i.e.K3G or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai... I would have at least expected an entertaining show. Instead we have the awfulness of Bachelor mixed with the worst from Bollywood.

We decided to watch episode 4: Mr. No Time For Love because sometimes we too feel like we have no time for love.

IMDB Rating: 4.3 Stars

Rotten Tomatoes: N/A

Character map

Vaibhav: An accountant who is trying to find love but not really succeeding. He claims hes a quiet awkward boy, but secretly he's probably a banker bro?

Karan: Karan the renowned Indian director

Sunny Leone: Actress that goes on a "first date" with Vaibav

Kaneez: Improv comedian that helps him go from friendzone to "shamazing"

Stylists: Maneka upgrades fashion and Shaan is all about grooming

Date 1: Shruti, the content writer and model, looking for an honest kind guy

Date 2: Nancy, Salsa dancer and choreographer, looking for a hot guy with nondouche energy

Structure

Part 1: Couch Talk

This is where Karan tries to get his Queer Eye on except he just relies on being a judgey desi person with such gems like "you still feel like a fat boy on the inside." Vaibhav is supposedly a super busy banker who spends 20 hours a day working, but also has time to be on this show? He should probably just join Bumble and save everyone some time.

Part 2: First date

He goes on a date with an actress known for being incredibly sexy and forward. It was painful to watch. The questions were awkward and it definitely felt like they were trying to make Vaibav seem as awk as possible. Trying to get the bar as low as possible is cheating Karan....

Part 3: Make over

1) Kaneez helped him with some physical exercises/improv exercises. She tried to help get hime out of his head aka deal with the idea he might get rejected. He definitely gets a little awkward when doing the improv and I'm not really sure he understood what he was doing. I'm also not sure if these exercises are actually helpful if you're shy and trying to break out of your bubble.

2) Shaan: The suggestions to trim his beard to create a faux jaw line and slightly messed up hair was on point. Also I loved that he got a facial - a metromale! in "desi" cinema!

3) Maneka: Her clothing selection wasn't great but she definitely nailed it when she said that his dating wardrobe should inspire fun and not be the same stuff he wears to work.

Part 4: Date 1

I love this girl and scene. Shruti took charge for most of the evening! It didn't seem super scripted and I like that Vaibhav seemed normal. They went from a rooftop drink to a quick dip in the pool- it was cute and mimicked a real life date. I think Karan's comments about talking about work is unnecessary but completely agree that you shouldn't ever call yourself a "spoiled mumma's boy". The date ends with Vaibhav getting her number!

Part 5: Date 2

The date starts at a salsa party. The conversation is meh and it seems like a normal date. Until a guy "asks" Nancy for a dance to trigger Vaibhav. He def turns into a douche banker bro... especially when he tries to mansplain her tattoo. I think he definitely tried his best to impress her. But it was sooo scripted.

Part 6: Final Selection

This was bizzaro- he definitely got along better with Shruti but he picked Nancy (probs cause she said he was attractive). I think both girls could definitely do better. Also I don't think Vaibhav transformed at all.

The Review

Ekta: I hate this show. I'll probably never watch another episode and if I do it'll be on 2x and I'll skip through most of it. 2/10

Sidra: This show is pretty great example of an Indian show trying to be "woke" and failing miserably. Everything in this episode was terrible. I did go back and watch episodes 1 and 2 which were better. I'd give this show a 4/10, a good watch when you are looking for something really terrible to watch.
