IMDB Rating: 8 Stars

Rotten Tomatoes: 73%

Both Ekta and I were excited to watch Defending Jacob when it first premiered. I'll be honest, I knew nothing about this show other than it had Chris Evans, but that was enough for me. Since it came out, I kept hearing that is was a terrible show, making it perfect for a Good Food Bad Critics Review. Spoilers ahead- consider yourself warned.

Character map

Jacob Barber: The teenager who is set to be the centerpiece of Defending Jacob

Captain America: OH MY GOODNESS, IT'S SCRUFFY CHRIS EVANS

Laurie Barber: Jacob's mother, who maybe works for a non-profit?

Plot: Captain America is an Assistant DA in Boston who is investigating the murder of a teenager who is in his son's year at school. As part of the investigation, he interviews all of the kids at his son school who are VERY suspicious of answering his questions considering he's Jacob's dad. We eventually find out that the kids at the school think Jacob did it, and Captain America finds what could be the murder weapon.

Review:

Ekta: I thought this show was going to be great but then I was disappointed by the first episode. The characters are so jarring and their dynamic is borderline uncomfortable to watch. However, if you stick around you will not be disappointed. By episode 2, I was hooked to the twists and everything started to make a little more sense. The ending is jaw dropping and I honestly shouldn't have ever doubted Captain america. 7.5/10

Sidra: I was prepared for this show to be an overacted melodrama and was pleasantly surprised that I actually enjoyed it! I started out with a running list of complaints/jokes on my phone to include in the blog but quickly ran out of things to make fun of because it was actually good?

Highs:

- Chris Evans

- Chris Evans is a good waker-upper

- Is this an alternate reality where Captain America lands his plane in England and finds Lady Mary and they get married and live happily ever after?

+

Lows:

- We get it, this show is set in Boston

- Lady Mary and Captain America have ZERO chemistry and just seem awkward as parents?

- A scene of a janitor mopping the floor, to again remind us that yes, we are in Boston

Based on the pilot I'd give Defending Jacob a 6+1/10 (anything with Chris Evans is guaranteed one point). I'm interested enough to finish it, but i'm not binging the rest of the episodes tonight.
