We're continuing on our journey with The Mandalorian this week. Ekta's thoughts are still in blue and Sid's are in teal. Plenty of spoilers in this one, so proceed with caution:
Plot Summary:
INTRO: Mando is tracked by some bounty hunters who try to trip him the old school way. He uses his jetpack to escape and gets more information from Peli via a bet on sabacc.
I want a jet pack - Mando was v bad ass when he uses it it to save himself and kill the hunter. Peli and Dr. Mandible are playing sabacc as Mando arrives -- she has an Idiot's Array, a rare hand that was mentioned in Solo.
Once again - I was so worried about baby yoda within the first 5 minutes of the episode. Shoutout to The Mandalorian for being such a good caretaker, and being witty to end up on the winning side of this encounter, yet again.
THE JOURNEY: After that nostalgic trip to Tatooine, Mando agrees to ferry Frog lady to the estuary moon of Trask in the system of the gas giant Kol Iben in hopes of finding another Mandolorian. The catch is that Mando can't use hyper speed otherwise the Frog lady's eggs will die. After boarding, Mando sets his ship to auto drive, stops bb Yoda from eating eggs, and takes a nap.
I'm sure it was meant to be funny but it's awkward and awful when bb yoda eats the Frog lady's eggs. Also fun fact - Frog lady is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (who played all the clone troopers in The Clone Wars).
Also it's one of the first times Mando struggles to communicate with someone (language wise). I wonder if that means he'll get a droid to help translate one day (like C3PO).
As a single woman approaching 30, I really resonated with the frog lady storyline. I can't believe Baby Yoda ate her eggs - such bad behavior. Baby Yoda is heading into the terrible two's and Mando is NOT ready for it.
BEING PULLED OVER: While traveling, New Republic traffic officers scan the "plates" of the Mandalorian’s ship, the Razor Crest. They find out that he's a bounty hunter and entangled in a bunch of nonsense so they're hot on his tail. He pulls some nice maneuvers and crashes his ship. The Frog lady tries to convince him to repair it
It's APPA from Kim's convenience! The other cop is played by Dave Filoni, the creator of the Clone Wars, Rebels and Resistance! Once again, I'm struck by how the galaxy has changed due to Luke and the Resistance's destruction of the death star. I know that the new empire is going to return to power but I'm glad that there are genuine cops policing the galaxy. I also love that their gear matches the resistance pilots gear from 4-6.
Mando is great at being a mandolorian but it is extremely taxing to have everyone out for you. I know that he broke his promise in the beginning to that bounty hunter so I find it interesting that the frog lady was able to call him to action by invoking his mandolorian oath. I think it's bc he has respect for the Frog lady and/or bc he knows that he eventually has to repair the ship to leave. There were many flashbacks to how he became part of the Mandolorian family & scenes with the mandolorian leader. In the future, I wonder if his mandolorianess will be enforced by the social pressure.
Mando's smooth talking was not enough for him to evade these offices - I guess even the best can't win them all. I think Mando gave up on fixing his ship too early in the night, but Frog Lady is getting very crafty to learn how to communicate with Mando. Frog Lady is quickly rising in my Mandalorian power rankings.
THE SPIDER DEN: After following Frog lady's trail to some hot springs. Bb Yoda eats a egg thing and accidentally awakens a bunch of horrifying spider creatures.
The spiders look like wyyyschokk from Jedi: Fallen Order (video game), but Lucasfilm confirmed that they're a different species inspired by the same Ralph McQuarrie design.
The wave of spiders reminds me of Harry Potter 2 and I was definitely covering one if not both eyes for a good part of it. I'm a little curious if the spiders just sleep in their eggs or if they're constantly rehatching? Also are they drawn to the warmth of the hot springs or does that lure their prey? Also why don't they have a spider web?
Clearly Mando is not feeding baby yoda enough if he's wandering around eating random eggs. He's a growing yoda who needs more food.
THE CLIFF HANGER CONCLUSION: The crew and razor crest are saved by the republic cop/pilots because Mando left some bad mercenaries in prison and tried to save a New Republic officer. They didn't unfortunately help fix up the Razor Crest. Mando manages to get the engine working, but can't repair the mangled hull.
Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnn. I love that Mando's rap sheet is long and shows that he's always been driven to justice and generally had a decent moral compass. I think he's going to be a great daddy to bb Yoda. I wonder if they will share any touching father - son scenes in later seasons.
The Mandalorian is a Western after all, so of course Mando's past good deeds are enough for the officers to help him out - but not enough to fix the ship.
Baby Yoda continuing to act out, not sleeping and eating random eggs. Hopefully Mando becomes a better guardian soon - baby yoda needs structure!
Review:
Ekta- 9.5/10 I hate cliff hangers so -.5 for that. But otherwise, I really really enjoyed the introduction of a new planet, creature, setting the stage with the pilots, the karma of mando's old deeds, and his renewed call to purpose.
Sidra: 9/10 This episode didn't capture my attention quite as well as the last episode, mostly because I'm not sure where we're going this season (other than trying to find more mandalorians). I'm still loving the world building that's happening, and I'm 100% in on this show.
